With exams coming to an end, many Leaving cert students are looking forward to their post-exam-stress getaway.

Leaving Cert holidays are practically a rite of passage these days, with most students looking to blow-off steam for a week or two following what is undoubtedly some of the most stressful weeks in their young lives.

However, for some this will be their first holiday abroad without supervision which will also be a great concern to a lot of parents. We want to help everyone, so we have put together a list of the top holiday destinations and also some helpful tips to keep parents somewhat at ease!

1. Magaluf

Magaluf is a resort town on the Spanish island of Majorca, it is well known for its lively nightlife and excellent resort facilities making it an ideal choice for your Leaving Cert Holiday. So if you’re after an all-round holiday in the sun, make it a holiday to Magaluf. Magaluf can be a busy spot, so make sure you know where your friends are. Under no circumstances ever leave a friend on their own. There are people who will target them for this reason specifically, so always do a headcount.

2. Santa Ponza

Santa Ponsa is located on the South West coast of Majorca and is a thriving and popular holiday resort. Santa Ponsa has a the most beautiful sandy beaches and comes alive in the evenings with a multitude of clubs and restaurants to keep you entertained. With Santa Ponsa being an island, with any island or holiday there is risks involved with water, always swim within your depth and stay within your depth. Alcohol is a factor in 1/3 of drownings, do not mix it with water activities.

3. Tenerife

Thousands of revellers enjoy life in this vibrant holiday destination that is renowned for its 24-hour colourful festivities, making it one of the most popular places to visit in all of Europe. Particularly popular is the one kilometre stretch known as Verónicas that is packed with nightclubs, cabaret bars, shops and restaurants. Neon lights, music pumping from the doorways and people dancing in the street are what you will find here, keep your wits about you as tourist hubs are often targeted for pick pocketing and the last thing you want is to have to ring home for money.

4. Albufeira

Albufeira is ideal for anyone who wants to be close to a fantastic beach, have plenty of places to wine and dine or party until late. You really wouldn’t need to leave the resort, so no worries about hiring a car if you don’t want to. If hiring a car make sure to read the policy, it goes without saying be extra vigilent and safe as you will be driving on new roads and on a different side. There is usually good public transport, we would recommend this as it can often be cheaper.

5. Kavos

Kavos is an idyllic seaside town on the stunning Greek island of Corfu. It is a very lively resort town and very popular with young holidaymakers from Britain and Ireland. The main strip comes alive from early evening until the early hours of the morning where revelers leaving clubs and bars head to the beach and watch the sunrise. With beautiful sunrises comes holiday romances and they are going to happen whether your Mammy likes it or not. Always stay safe and keep your friends with you, strangers and still strangers!

6. Salou

Salou is a resort town along Spain’s northeastern Costa Daurada. Its beaches range from small, craggy coves to the busy main Llevant and Ponent strips. It has an incredible listing of Irish bars which attract much more than the Irish. Always drink responsibly, it is never worth a hangover when you could be having a wonderful day in the sun. It is good to have a little first aid pouch with bandages and various over the counter medication to use if necessary.

7. Kos

Kos has more than its fair share of beaches. They come in all shapes and sizes, from golden swathes backed by beach bars, to hidden bays and little-known coves. As well as the nightlife of Kos Town and a plethora of beach resorts, the island also offers some of the best archaeological sites to be found in the Mediterranean.

Make sure you have travel insurance Leaving Certificate holidays are the main culprits for broken teeth, bones and other injuries. Make sure you have insurance and have your policy printed out and put in a safe place. Always count to ten if you think something may be dangerous before you do anything irrationally.

8. Ibiza

Ibiza is a Mediterranean island off the coast of Valencia in Spain. The island is renowned for it’s beautiful beaches and it’s vibrant nightclubs. Spend the days relaxing on the beautiful sandy beaches and the evenings enjoying Ibiza’s legendary night-life. San Antonio in Ibiza is the ideal destination to enjoy with your friends. Ibiza’s clubs can be expensive, make sure to budget before you go. Don’t be one of those people who spends like crazy without a thinking about it as you’ll run out of money. By having a loose budget that covers food, activities and of course, partying, you’ll end up not having to worry about missing out.

9. Faliraki

Faliraki is the main seaside resort on the Greek Island of Rhodes. It has a wonderous 5 kilometre beach, the most popular beach is in Rhodes and offers an abundance of water sports to keep you entertained during the day. Faliraki is also home to one of the largest water parks in Europe and has an abundance, of cafes, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. When out enjoying yourself during fun activities, make sure to drink plenty of water, stay hydrated!

10. Crete

Crete is the largest of all the Greek Islands. The beautiful coastline is dotted with numerous coves and bays and lots of soft sandy beaches along the Mediterranean Sea. As well as the glorious beaches you can enjoy the local sites as well as a vibrant night-life. Crete has something for everyone to enjoy. With sun come sunburn especially with our lovely Irish fair skin, make sure to top up your sun cream regularly.

Lastly don’t feel pressurized. A massive tattoo or piercing may seem like a good idea but it is not just your parents that may disapprove, a career may seem like miles away when on your Leaving Cert holiday but trust us, it’s not! There is options for temporary tattoos and you can get stick on body jewels if you feel the desire.
